Dr. John Goodenough, widely credited as the creator of the lithium-ion battery, passed away at the age of 100, as confirmed by the University of Texas at Austin. Despite being relatively unknown in public circles, Goodenough’s breakthrough in 1980 while at the University of Oxford revolutionized the tech industry. He made a cathode with layers of lithium and cobalt oxide that produced a stronger voltage while greatly improving safety. Goodenough received many accolades, including the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2019 and the US National Medal of Science in 2011. His legacy will be felt for years to come as industries are slowly moving on from lithium-ion batteries.
